Writing at Cooper Perry
Cooper Perry Primary School aims to develop confident, imaginative writers who can communicate clearly and with purpose. Writing is embedded across the curriculum, supported by rich language experiences, high-quality texts, and meaningful writing opportunities. The school teaches key skills—such as grammar, punctuation, spelling, and vocabulary—through a structured yet creative approach that encourages independence, stamina, and enjoyment.
Early writing begins with mark-making and phonics through Little Wandle, progressing to independent sentence writing. From Year 1 to 6, writing is taught through the Literacy Tree programme, which uses diverse, high-quality books to inspire purposeful writing for real audiences and deepen understanding. Spelling Seeds and consistent handwriting teaching further support progress.
Assessment for learning, including live marking and verbal feedback, helps pupils refine their work. Inclusive strategies ensure all pupils can access the curriculum. By the end of primary school, children leave as thoughtful, articulate writers with strong technical skills and a unique authorial voice.
