Languages at Cooper Perry

At Cooper Perry Primary, our languages curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity and enjoyment in learning languages, while developing pupils’ confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Through language learning, pupils also develop an appreciation of different cultures and a respect for diversity.

Our curriculum is based on the National Curriculum and is supported by high-quality Oak National Academy resources, ensuring learning is progressive, inclusive and engaging for all pupils. Languages are taught weekly across Key Stage 2, with lessons combining interactive activities and regular exposure to accurate pronunciation.

We are currently in a transition period, with Spanish taught in Lower Key Stage 2 and French taught in Upper Key Stage 2. French will be phased out by September 2027, after which Spanish will be the main language studied across Key Stage 2.

Although languages are not statutory in the Early Years, children in EYFS and Key Stage 1 are introduced to basic Spanish vocabulary, such as greetings, to build early awareness and enthusiasm for language learning.
