Reading VIPERS Explained

In our reading sessions at Cooper Perry, we use the term ‘Reading VIPERS’ to encourage children to actively think about the comprehension skills they are using when they read. These are:

V – Vocabulary
Looking at the choice of words that an author uses in a text.

I – Inference
Information that is suggested but not said in the text. ‘The hidden meaning’.

P – Predict
Explaining what might happen next based on what has happened in the text.

E – Explain
Explain an aspect of the text. This may include why the author includes it or how the meaning is enhanced through choice of language.

R – Retrieval
Locate and retrieve information from the text to answer questions.

S – Summarise
Sum up key points in the text or sequence events as a summary, making sure you keep it brief.

You could try one or more of these types of questions at home when you hear your child read to help develop their skills. Children are provided with VIPERS bookmarks. These bookmarks provide sentence stems to support creating questions for each skill. There will be a bookmark for KS1 and KS2.

We appreciate your help with supporting your child’s reading!
