Year 5 2014-15
Staffordshire Regiment Museum - A fantastic trip!
Welcome back to the summer term!
I hope you have all had a lovely Easter and I am sure you liked the Easter cards!
This term we will be changing our topic to World War 1; this will be our focus within Literacy lessons to enhance writing. In addition to this, numerous opportunities will be provided to the children to use their History skills. In Science, we will complete our ‘Living things and their habitats’ unit before moving onto ‘Animals and Humans’. Maths will remain the same and workshops will be offered to the children every lesson, throughout the week. I would like to remind you that it is beneficial for the children to know their timetables as they transfer to so many areas within maths (please keep working on them at home). In P.E. our orienteering unit will come to an end with the children creating their own courses and then we will move onto Invasion games. They will cover Athletics with Stoke City.
I would like to remind you of my email address, if you have any queries or questions feel free to contact me on email@example.com
Year 4 and 5 Science Week investigation!
Collage - Charles I and Oliver Cromwell
Homework - please can the children read Jack and the Beanstalk before Monday so they are ready to talk about it in Literacy.
Happy New Year! Thank you for the lovely Christmas cards and gifts. I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and break. I’m sure you are all looking forward to the next term ahead. Our new topic is the British Civil War 1603-1714, where we will be researching about the past to enhance our writing. Literacy lessons will continue to allow the children to work on individual targets, enabling them to meet an aspect of their targeted level.
Maths lessons will build upon the skills and understanding gained in term 1. We will continue to provide the children with workshops that are tailored to their ability and needs. I would like to remind you that mental maths tests are an ongoing weekly assessment and homework. Education city provides lots of ‘learning’ pages and activities that can support and guide the children in areas that they are having difficulty with.
In Science we will be continuing to study Earth and Space before moving onto a new aspect of Science, Living things and their habitats. Throughout this unit we will be looking at animal kingdom groups and the differences in their life cycles.
In Geography a local study on Stafford will be covered. In Physical Education we will cover net games and orienteering, which I am sure the children will thoroughly enjoy! Please can you ensure that your child has suitable clothing for outdoor sessions, including tracksuit bottoms and a jumper!
I would like to thank you for your ongoing support.
Greek Vases. I am sure you will agree, they look fantastic!
I would just like to say that we have had a fantastic first half-term in Year 5. It was great to see a huge audience at the Harvest assembly and lots of you at our open afternoon (thankyou for all your support).
This term we are moving onto Earth and Space in Science, which the children already seem very interested and excited about! In Art we are moving onto textiles and we have a Christmas focus which will be very fun on the run up to Christmas! In maths we are currently looking at multiplication and soon we will be progressing onto division. It would be fantastic if you can support the children with their timestables at home as they are key to what we are focusing on.
I would also like to mention that I am starting a Netball club on Thursday nights after school 3:30pm - 4:30pm, it would be fantastic to see lots of boys and girls from Year 5 there along with children from Year 6. However, the reply slips need to be in on Tuesday 11th November and places will go to those who bring their slips in first!
I would like to bring to your attention the mental Maths test that takes place every Friday. As you already know the children bring their test home to work on questions they struggle with, please encourage them to use education city to focus on key aspects.
Just another reminder - if you have any issues or questions please don't hesitate to catch me at the end of the school day or via email.
