Welcome to year 1! I hope you all had a lovely, restful summer. I am thoroughly looking forward to working with yourselves and your children this year.
Our first topic in year one is ‘Kings and Queens’ and the children will be learning all about what a monarchy is and about significant kings and queens from the past. Our first science topic in year one is everyday materials.
PE will take place on Mondays (taught by Mrs Stanton) and Thursdays (taught by Mr Allman from Sports Plus). Please ensure that PE kits are in school at all times in case of last minute lesson changes. As the weather begins to get colder please also ensure that children have something warm to wear when they are outside.
Reading books will be changed on a Tuesday and Friday, if your child has read their book but please ensure that they have their reading bag in school every day. In year one the children have a weekly spelling test on a Friday. To begin with, five spellings will be sent home for the children to learn and this will increase to ten spellings by the end of the year. The spellings will usually be based on the sounds they have been learning in class during phonics sessions or they will be taken from the year 1 common exception and high frequency word lists. The spellings will be put in your child’s reading diary each Friday. Other homework will be set on a Friday and will be due in the following Wednesday.
We strongly encourage all children to be independent and take care of their own belongings, for example reading bags, homework, uniform, PE kits, water bottles etc.
