Welcome back!

Firstly, I would like to say a huge thank you (from all of the Year 6 team) for all of the Christmas gifts and cards that were sent in before the Christmas break.

This term is going to be a busy one! We have got lots of exciting activities planned, starting with our new class text - Holes by Louis Sacher. After reading the first three chapters, It is clear that the children are captured by this text. I think it might have something to do with themes within the book (naughty children are sent to a correctional facility to dig holes all day). This will be used to not only improve reading fluency and comprehension skills but it will also be used as a stimulus for writing.

In English, we are going to be linking to our class text for writing opportunities as well as covering other small units, that lend themselves to a wide variety of different genres. In addition to this, we will be looking at The British Empire after February half-term. This will create a nice link between the History content and skills that need to be covered, along with non-fiction writing opportunities.

In Maths, we will be continuing to cover the different strands. The children will be provided with an array of activities that incorporate fluency skills, reasoning and problem solving.

Homework

Accelerated reader - please make sure that your child is reading at home regularly. As soon as they have completed their book they can complete a comprehension quiz at school and then it can be changed.

Times Table Rock Star - every child has a login for this programme. There are different games that they can play on to improve their recall speed and understanding.

Spellings - Friday they will be tested and they will be introduced to their new spellings for the week.

Extra - as well as the weekly homework above, the children will be set other pieces of homework for different subjects. For example, it might be a grammar task that is due over a couple of days. Please check the newsletter each week.

PE will be indoor and outdoor this term so please can you send your child with an indoor kit (shorts or sports leggings, PE top and trainers) and an outdoor kit (Sports leggings or tracksuit bottoms, PE top, jumper and trainers).

On Fridays, Stafford College will be back to work with us (starting on the 2nd Feb). Please send your child to school in their PE kit, along with their school uniform.

If you have any questions or queries please contact me via email aharrison@cooperperry.staffs.sch.uk or at the end of the school day.

Thank you for your support
