WOW! Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication on your Ancient Greece homework projects. They look truly incredible!

Hello families

Welcome back to school after such a lovely, long summer break. I hope you all had a fun filled summer and are excited and eager for the year ahead. I am extremely happy to be working with both you and your children again.

Our classroom is prepped and ready to go and the Ancient Greeks have truly taken over. Throughout the term we will use our history topic to enhance and inspire our learning in other areas such as writing; art and design and technology. In science we will be exploring a range of materials and their properties; we will put our scientific enquiry skills to the test in a range of innovative investigations. Our class text is Matilda by Roald Dahl, each day the children will take part in a carousel of guided reading tasks centered around our class book. If you wish to know more about what we are learning about in year 5, please take a look at the Medium Term Planning Hexagons on our class page.

This year we are extremely lucky to have Mrs Smith teaching music and Miss Grattage teaching MFL. Miss Harrison will also continue to teach PE on a Monday and Wednesday afternoon. In addition to this, year 5 will participate in a PE session on a Friday morning, which will be led by Stafford College. Please could you ensure that PE kits are in school for the entire school week and also note that children will be coming home in PE kits on a Monday and a Wednesday.

Also, please could children have their reading book, homework diary and pencil case in school everyday. Over the next few days each child will complete an accelerated reader task which will determine their book level for this year. I would be extremely appreciative of your support and encouragement of reading at home.
New spelling words will be glued into the children’s homework diary on a Monday and they will be tested on the following Monday. There will be 10 spellings to learn each week, these will be taken from the National Curriculum age related spellings, the common exception words and/or in relation to the spelling rules we are learning in class.

Look out for weekly homework on the newsletter beginning next week. Weekly homework will include spellings, a review of the mental maths test, maths homework as well as any occasional topic related homework. Generally maths homework will be handed out on a Friday and will be due back in on the following Thursday.

Finally, all children are welcome to have a water bottle in the classroom, which can be re-filled at any time from a water cooler in the shared area.
